The renowned Cuban artist Antonio Espinosa will present a solo show of paintings, photographs, and drawings in Lima. The artist will be present at the inauguration of the exhibition, entitled Menos Gris (Less Gray), this coming Thursday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Galería de Arte Enlace Arte Contemporáneo, located at Av. Camino Real 1123 in San Isidro. Antonio Espinosa (Havana, Cuba, 1974- ) has put his own distinctive stamp on contemporary Cuban painting and its renowned landscape tradition. The artist studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba, graduating with a degree in visual arts in 1997. The show to be presented in Lima features approximately 15 of his works. In recent years, Antonio Espinosa’s work has been marked by a sustained focus on landscapes, although he has reconfigured the subject matter and approach of that artistic discipline. While his earlier pieces reflected the bucolic nature of the country landscape using a wide range of grays, in turn paying homage to the grand masters of painting (Andrew Wyeth and Tomás Sánchez) in his technique and composition, his most recent creations stand out for a different approximation to the landscape. In some ways, the subject matter has changed: the works are no longer rooted in the placidity and desolation of a given environment, but rather, a metaphorical evocation using a resource that has been addressed almost incessantly by the artist: the sea. Antonio Espinosa also turns his gaze to other subject matter in his drawings, attempting to reflect on contemporary dynamics such as consumerism and alienation. In these pieces, the portrayal of medications and candy calls attention to the overuse of the image as manipulation in modernity. A proclivity for interacting with images in a singular reinterpretation marks another of the artist’s series developed, in which—drawing inspiration from Cuban concrete painters—he has translated their language into a group of photographs that assume the geometric focus of those creators. But Espinosa does not copy the concrete artists’ language; on the contrary, he readapts its figuration to his own style. The final results are photographs imbued with geometry through colorful flowers and their vigor, reforming into groups and playing with the value of abstract works. These recent series and works (all of them from 2014 and 2015) make up this exhibition, specially designed for the Galería Enlace in Lima, a city where the artist has not exhibited in ten years. The show as a whole reflects the artist’s intent to translate and document, including color with mistrust and elegance, bringing a sensitive intuition to the variation of his works’ subject matter without abandoning the streamlined technique and style that characterizes his output.
