The show presented by Ángel Marcos in Lima consists of a group of 17 medium- and large-sized photographs. In 2001, almost at the same time as the attack on the Twin Towers in New York, Ángel Marcos was beginning a project in that city that has been continued elsewhere, creating a recognizable, calculated, and yet emotional body of work. This project, under the general title of Alrededor del sueño (On Sleep), brings together photographic works created in different places around the world (New York, Cuba, China, Madrid, Barcelona), along with the artist’s most recent work, which is being presented for the very first time at Galería Enlace Arte Contemporáneo: Vaticano. Considering the Vatican to be a City-State, Ángel Marcos worked just as he has throughout the Alrededor del sueño project, using different viewpoints to show us “Power.” In this work, Power manifests itself in its purest state. Through photographs of public spaces in the Vatican, it is possible to catch a glimpse of the economic and religious secrets it hides. We also find religion, as a catalyst and generator of desires and hopes in our society, which is positioned in the work of Ángel Marcos like a dream aimed at achieving wellbeing. The author, using photography as his primary mode of artistic expression, places us before the everyday, forcing us to reflect on our own condition. These images invite us to enjoy them at first glance. It is only afterwards that the spectator begins to feel submerged in a kind of disquieting interest. Marcos’ works, defined by their striking visual attractiveness, lead us back into the world with a rare critical reality. The artist develops his oeuvre through specific projects that serve as a subjective approach to the act of photography. Such is the case with Paisajes (Landscapes) (1997), Los bienaventurados (The Blessed) (1997), La Chute (2000), Alrededor del sueño (On Sleep) (2001-2017) (New York, Cuba, China, Madrid, Barcelona), Rastros (Traces) (2003), La mar negra (The Black Sea) (2007), Un coup de dès (2008), Rabo de Lagartija (Lizard’s Tail) (2010), La mirada blanca (The Blank Stare) (2010), La mirada oculta (The Hidden Gaze) (2011), and La subversión íntima (Intimate Subversion), which was presented at the Fifty-Fifth Venice Biennal, or his most recent project, Vaticano (Vatican). All of these projects have been shown in individual and collective exhibitions at numerous national and international institutions and private galleries. The works of Ángel Marcos are held in renowned collections and museums, such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (Valencia), Centro-Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo (Vitoria-Gasteiz), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC) (León), Museo Patio Herreriano (Valladolid), Naples Museum of Art (Florida, USA), Fonds National d’Art Contemporain (FNAC) and La Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, the Margulies Collection in Miami, and the Tishman Speyer Foundation at Rockefeller Center (New York), among others. He has published a number of books and catalogues, including Viaje por el teatro Calderón, Paisajes, Los bienaventurados, Obras Póstumas, El deseo del otro, Alrededor del sueño, En Cuba, Plaza Mayor, espacio y representación, China, Metoikesis, Coup de Parole, Un coup de dés, Desiderátum, Escenarios para el vacío, Rabo de lagartija, The Intimate Subversion, and Alrededor del sueño.
