One of the most outstanding proponents of Cuban abstract and geometric art will inaugurate an exhibition covering much of his artistic development and investigation at the Galería de Arte Enlace Arte Contemporáneo on Thursday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m. Eduardo Rubén was born in Havana in 1958. From a very early age, he displayed an affinity for the visual arts, graduating in 1982 with a degree in Architecture from the Instituto Superior Politécnico José Antonio Echevarría in Havana, Cuba. This painter’s artistic output is characterized by its serenity and technical preciosity. He has also engaged in major environmental design projects and murals. His impressive résumé includes countless exhibitions and projects in which he has taken part, and his works may be viewed at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba; the Museo de Arte Moderno “La Tertulia” in Cali, Colombia; the Museo de Arte Costarricense in San Jose, Costa Rica; the National Museum of Szczecin, Poland; the Museo de Arte Moderno in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; the Museum of Finest Cuban Arts in Vienna, Austria; as well as in numerous galleries, such as the Panamerican Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas, USA; Galeria FP in Lisbon, Portugal; the Zeit Foto Gallery in Tokyo, Japan; and the Fundación Cristobal Gabarrón in Spain, among many others. The selection of his works to be presented at the Galería Enlace, under the curatorship of Roberto Ascóniga, includes some of his most important series, which mark the evolution of his career as an artist. Eduardo Rubén held his first solo show in 1981 at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana. From the very beginning, he focused on the canvas, engaging in chromatic and optical oscillations, abstract whims, and visual illusions starting early on, as well as exhibiting formal loyalties to architecture; followed in a second stage by the subsequent appropriation of some of that discipline’s primary constituent elements—bars, windows, columns, bas reliefs, friezes, frontispieces, and borders—imbuing his work with a singular poetic effectiveness among avant-garde Cuban painters of the second half of the twentieth century. Although many of his works are based on photographic images, the pictorial plane has always played a leading role regardless of format and medium. It has been this plane—with the artist’s undeniable mastery of the brush or airbrush—that contains the keys to understanding an aesthetic invented in the solitude of his studio, far from all conventional academic formation, and from which no one, apparently, is able to escape when it comes the time to forge a path, a professional trajectory. The show to be presented by Enlace Arte Contemporáneo is an exceptional opportunity to meet a true creator, one who has made significant contributions to the world of contemporary visual arts. The exhibition Selección de Obras by EDUARDO RUBÉN can be visited through October 26 from Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. FREE ADMISSION.
