ENLACE ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO Gallery (Av. Pardo y Aliaga 676, San Isidro) announces the opening of the solo painting exhibition by the national renowned artist CÉSAR MARTÍNEZ. Martínez (Lima, 1955) studied painting at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes of Peru, graduating in 1982 with First Prize and the Gold Medal. He has held solo shows in Lima, Madrid, Bogota, and Bremen, Germany, as well as participating in numerous collective shows in Argentina, Ecuador, the United States, France, China, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Spain. Twenty years after his last solo show in Lima, Martínez presents the current exhibition, made up of twelve works in mixed technique on canvas, medium and large in size, wherein the artist explores, synthesizes, and puts his own personal seal on his conception of art. With a tendency toward abstraction, he delves into the spaces created and the relationships between the elements proposed, soaking up the emotions left behind by this visual tour through his oeuvre. “Since graduating from the Escuela de Bellas Artes in 1982, he has slowly confirmed himself as one of the Peruvian artists who have most succeeded in maturing, over the course of nearly twenty-five years, refining a concept in which the gaze is concentrated on the details, forms, and sensuality of virtual and real textures.” “Rooted in a Pre-Columbian iconography fused with aspects of modernity, the artist amalgamates the geometry that crosses over the surface of the work with organic references, to which he adds spots and organisms, resulting finally in a harmonious work of splendid style, with a rhythm created by the lines across all his media.” “There are, in the most experimental works, the traces of chance, intervened letters, stamped seals, and above all, a line work characterized by both its spontaneity and its firmness, evidencing an artist at the height of his powers, a man who has forged his own craft as the result of hard work in the search for the perfect painting, one that he once dreamed of achieving. But as Fernando de Szyszlo has often repeated, that perfect work is like a greyhound race in which the dogs never manage to catch up with their prey. In that, we are in agreement. I harbor suspicions toward any art that dubs itself perfect. I believe, rather, in the hesitations, doubts, and passions inherent to the perfectable human being, which are the things that truly drive an artist to blaze his own path. Martínez has achieved precisely this, with his long career that has led up to the current exhibition at ENLACE.” “This is an important show, since in recent years the artist has exhibited more internationally than locally. Despite this, his oeuvre is constantly present for all of those who, like me, for reasons of vice or trade, recall those artists who, at some point in their lives, left a mark on our memories that has deserved to be retained.” (LAMA: 2009). Excerpt from the introduction to the exhibition catalogue. “César Martínez’s painting is abstract in the sense that it responds to an internal musical architecture, made from variations and free-standing structures, which exhibit the notable influence of drawing, that permanent register that he succeeds in using as an ideal means to interpret and interpellate his immediate reality.” (MEDINA: 2009). Art Motiv Journal, November 2009 “Everything that has been said about Martínez’s technical prowess is on display in these works. The resources he makes use of in the school of abstraction he practices are wildly varied. The architecture of this ‘geometricizing’ work is based on pencil drawings that use all available elements.” “Texture and color together act as the detonating factor of pleasure in Martínez’s work. But it is the linework, the lines with the ruling pen and the inscribed or scratched drawing—like a dance of conical sections—that impress upon his work an unmistakable character.” (VILLACORTA, 1989). The exhibition may be viewed through January 30, 2010, Monday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. No entry fee.
