Sergio Camporeale (Buenos Aires, 1937 –) is an Argentine visual artist who has led a long and important international career. He became highly specialized in watercolors and engravings, as well as painting, of course, techniques that he has developed exquisitely. He graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Priliano Puerredón in 1961. Since then, he has participated in individual and collective exhibitions in Buenos Aires, Paris, Tokyo, Lisbon, New York, Singapore, Miami, Panama, Lima, and Bergamo. In 1976, he settled in Paris for two decades with his partner. He exhibited his series Retratos de familia (Family Portraits) at the Parisian gallery Francony and received the Halib Gargour Prize in 1991. In 1998, he exhibited at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Panama. He returned to Buenos Aires in the 2000s. In 2011, he took part in the Latin American Artists of Italian Heritage exhibition in Washington, D.C. His works are held in museum collections in Switzerland, France, the United States, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, and Peru. The exhibition presented at Galería Enlace consists of a very original and striking group of twenty-two small-scale pieces on MDF, made using acrylic and mixed techniques, grouped together by theme with each eloquent piece exhibiting a technical and material richness, laden with irony and humor; as does a group of larger paintings on canvas. The artist’s vision offers a satirical and sarcastic take on the human condition, and especially that of urban man, as imposed on the land and his relationships, something these works show and perhaps attempt to explain, enjoining the spectator to interact and dialogue through language and images, through visual, pictorial interpretation. “Each painting is a riddle without an answer. That is where I seek the spectator’s complicity to create another reality, to figure out what is happening in the work, with its unconnected scenes and nonsensical figures, and turn this into poetry,” states Sergio Camporeale. “Sergio Camporeale has succeeded in gradually creating a world, a great theater or circus populated by a wide variety of actors and figures who, referenced in an immense range of scenes, display or allude to the conditions, purposes, and intentions of man, expressing everything from surprise to impassivity, from the curious to the grotesque, and even the deformed and the monstrous; masks that hide, at the same time giving away profound impulses and passions, surely their true motivations, in that Nietzschean sense where appearance is equal to reality. Nietzsche rejects the truth as reality in favor of the truth as appearance. The categorical difference he pinpoints between the real and the apparent in the sphere of reality means that it is intention that makes up the ontological void left behind by the human being, or rather, by his absence, meaning that it is intention, so often delirious and egocentric, that which determines the criteria of truth and values.” Roberto Ascóniga, curator.
