ENLACE ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO Gallery (Av. Camino Real 1123, San Isidro) announces the opening of the solo painting exhibition REFRACTORY TRANSPARENCES bythe Chilean artist MARCELA KRAUSE, next Friday, Octuber 10 at 7.30 p.m. Marcela Krause was born in Puerto Montt, Chile. She studied Design at the Pontificia Universidad Católica and holds a Master’sin Marketing. She also studied under Eugenio Dittborn, the renowned Chilean visual artist and winner of the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas 2005. This is her fifth solo show. She has also participated in group exhibitions in Peru, Venezuela, Chile, and New York. The exhibition Transparencias Refractarias (Refractory Transparencies), to be presented at Galería Enlace Arte Contemporáneo in San Isidro, is made up of a series of fourteen abstract paintings of different sizes and a large polyptych consisting of thirty-seven pieces, all made using a new and unique technique that is the result of exhaustive investigation on the use and behavior of different media and materials, their characteristics, and the adherence of different inks and enamels, with the goal of transforming and rendering transparent the paintingprocess and the painting itself, allowing that which is normally hidden, whether it be the wall, the stand, or the procedure itself, to become visible to the viewer and form an integral part of the work. The use of transparent and flexible support media instead of opaque cloth, such as polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride, among others, make it possible to paint on both sides, only on the front, and on occasions, only on the back side, allowing for greater complexity, since the result cannot be seen while painting. The fundamental objective of this experimentation is to express the need to salvage the values of transparency, naturality, and honesty in today’s life, with the intention of creating a space for our being to manifest itself cleanly, without the demand for masks or others’ unreal expectations. The art critic Ernesto Muñoz, curator of the exhibition, says of this new series: “The history of Contemporary Art has been witness to the end of the intricate definitions created to separate painting and sculpture, definitions pigeonholed by age-old tendencies. In our century, these gazes have been left behind in search of the development of creativity through valuable investigations. Painting in images dates back to a savage expressionism, becoming once again valid through the use of materials unheard of in the visual arts in an effort to achieve transparency. This theme, so prized by Renaissance painters, leads us into the field of contemporary art research. Krause stands in front of her painting, covering it with streaks of color and resorting to light as a generative facet of the work. Or rather, it is an addition, stoking the mystery and sensuality contained in the work. The category of contemporary alludes to the artist in her search for ways to speak of external changes in generous images that range from ideograms to subjective impulses coming from the subconscious.” Ernesto Muñoz, Secretary of AICA International, Chilean Chapter.
