(b. 1979, Caracas, Venezuela) The artist Alejandro Vega Beuvrin holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in architecture from the Central University of Venezuela. His architectural background is the main influence and foundation of his three-dimensional metal sculptures, which vary from smaller formats (centimetres) to great sculptures that occupy plazas, incorporating and engaging with the surroundings, like the three commissioned sculptures for the Cipriano Castro Park in Caracas, Venezuela (2015). His abstract structures are deeply influenced by the despair and anxiety caused by the political unrest of his native Venezuela, as well as urban spaces, and are characterised by their absence of volume, making them appear as two-dimensional at first glance. These are born from a technique he calls “spatial drawing”. Vega Beuvrin has also participated in various solo and collective exhibitions like the Carré Latin festival, Paris, France (2016-2018) and FAUART Barcelona, Spain (2002). He also won first place at the public competition for the development of urban sculpture organised by the Department of Transport and Civil engineering of Venezuela in 2013.
